Road Runner Sports
Situation
Road Runner Sports, a longtime client of Aurora contributor Corey Rich, approached him for a catalogue shoot. Their concept was to capture catalogue covers, inside catalogue and web content all exemplifying the beauty, simplicity and joy of running. Rich and the creative team at Novus Select discussed the still image aspect of the project and then came up with the idea to simultaneously capture video on the same shoot. They utilized the economy of scale by piggybacking a video production onto the still image shoot, knowing that once they were paying for 4 days of production, the majority of those costs had already been covered and for a small amount more they could add a full video shoot. By approaching it this way, Road Runner Sports acquired all of the still photography they needed in addition to the video footage.
Solution
Corey Rich went on location for four days of back-to-back shooting, two days in Colorado followed by two days in San Diego. While the majority of the focus was on capturing still photography Rich was able to shoot video footage and still images with the same cast, crew locations and equipment. In each location he used only one extra assistant, chosen specifically because they could work on both video and still photography with equal competency, keeping this a very small footprint production. One of the things that makes Novus Select stand out, and enabled us to successfully complete this project, is that our filmmakers and photographers embrace cutting edge technology. Rich used Nikon DSLR cameras, which allowed him to shoot the stills with confidence, and then with almost the same equipment and configuration switch a dial and shoot the video. With this technology and economy of scale Rich was able to shoot video footage for a 30 second spot in true HD.
Results
Novus Select was able to create a compelling 30-second video spot that perfectly complimented the still photo shoot. Novus Select's philosophy of using cutting edge technology and the right talent for each job created enormous efficiency and on this shoot allowed Road Runner Sports to get two sets of assets with only nominally increased production costs.
